Westminster Central Hall, one of London's historic buildings, hosted the awards ceremony in July 2008 at which the first students on the MA in Print Media Management graduated. This degree is run by the School of Printing and Publishing, at the London College of Communication (LCC), in association with Heidelberg's Print Media Academy (PMA).
The graduating students who attended are: Chin Chye Loo (Singapore), Josh Ramsbottom (Canada), David Reher (USA), Chuanzhi Yin (China). Unfortunately another graduate Jim David from India could not attend due to business commitments.
Each graduate has their own story to tell about how the degree has helped them move forward in the industry. Loo, as he prefers to be called, is a qualified engineer who holds a senior post at Singapore Press Holdings. He has used the course to strengthen his knowledge of operations management, marketing, and business strategy. The degree has "broadened my knowledge base, which no doubt will enable me to make a significant contribution in other areas of my company in the future," Loo commented. Modesty also stops him from saying that he passed with distinction.
Josh found that his MA has opened up a new position for him heading up the Centre for Excellence in Print Media at NorQuest College in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. "The combination of the work I did on my master's major project, and my MA really helped me to get my job at NorQuest," said Josh. Plus, Josh's drive and the personal commitment that he showed in ensuring that the first year of the course was a success for him, his fellow students, and all the staff involved, must also have been recognised by NorQuest.
The international profile of the students meant that in the ‘knowledge pool’ sessions where the students themselves led debates, discussed industry issues, and investigated a wide variety of business topics a greater insight was gained by students, and academics, into the culture, ethics, business problems and practices within the students various countries.
Although the United States has a number of well-respected print media education establishments David from the States decided to come to London to widen his print education. Having a technical prepress background, with a good grounding in print management David said, "the time I've spent in London, and at the PMA, has given me an insight into how to improve a printing businesses processes, and margins." Something he is now doing with his new employer in Montana. Everyone benefited from his experience, as he was able to contrast how US business practice varies from that in Europe, and Asia.
Having graduated the previous year from the School's BA Print Media Management course Chuanzhi was a welcome addition to the cohort. His family business, Jiangsu Jingdu Printing, where he is a director, has he said "benefited from the knowledge I gained on both my courses at the School." Having recently installed a Heidelberg press with UV drying his MA major project on UV proved useful in assisting his business to make the decision to install UV technology to help it develop its packaging market.
CMS Printing Press in Dubai is where Jim is now applying the management skills he gained on the course. "It is not until you start to use what you've learnt on a program that you realise just how much you did learn in a year," said Jim. Coming also from a family business he, like the other students, found the weeks spent at the PMA in Heidelberg extremely useful as it opened up "new business ideas, and concepts, that can be applied from a practical point of view," he added.
Enrolment for the new course is now open, and full details are available from the Print media Academy and the School of Printing and Publishing, at the London College of Communications.
